My wonderful daughter has been a line therapist working with autistic children for the past six years.  In honor of her work and those families and friends touched by autism, I’ve created a new series titled ” Leap Of Faith” which is inspired by my daughters dedication and love for children with autism. These images are as framed collages and  greeting cards at the iMAGiNETHAT! Art Studio (#12 on the brochure tour map) during the 2017 Northwoods Art Tour on July 28th,29th and 30th. 2017 Northwoods Art Tour July 28th-30th

I’m posting a few photographs of the artwork that will be showcased during the 2017 Northwoods Art Tour.   iMAGiNETHAT! Art Studio is located in Arbor Vitae ,about 1 mile north of the Lakeland Airport. My studio is #12 on the brochures guide map.

The WALKABOUT series is inspired by the two rescued Kodiak bear cubs that I’ve been documenting since September  of 2015.  This collage was created from a variety of  original prints that have been cut, torn and/ or paper punched into a wide selection of formations.  The bear is created from paper toweling that has been water-colored and cut into a bear shape.  The background of this composition is created from an original Intglio Print that was water-colored to create more contrast, enhance the prints textures to  entice the viewers visual interest.

During your visit to my art studio you will have the opportunity to learn how a collagraph plate is created and watch how an original Intaglio print is inked, the special printmaking paper (Rives BFK) is soaked, blotted and pulled through the Intaglio Printing Press to create a one of kind original print.

Early morning with Munsey and Boda

In the above photograph Munsey is on the right hand side and Boda is on the left hand side.  Boda has a broader snout, while Munsey has a narrower snout.

Munsey likes to touch his toes in the morning, while Boda likes to stretch and see if he can strip some bark off the tree that’s located  in the JP Adler Kodiak Bear Habitat Area.

If I’m lucky  Munsey and Boda will stop by the observation window and greet me!

Munsey and Boda now stand from head to toe at 7 feet in height and from front paws to toes they stretch 9 feet in length. Munsey’s weight is about 605 lbs. and Boda’s weight is about 620 lbs.

On the morning of June 22nd, 2017 the cubs were given a fruity ice snack after they finished their breakfast.  They really seem to enjoy their fruity ice snacks!

An unexpected rainstorm hit around 9:15 am and Munsey grabbed his fruity ice chunk and went into the pool, hoping Boda wouldn’t be able to take his snack!

Snack Time

Munsey and Boda really enjoy their morning and afternoon snacks.  A great time to see the Kodiak bear cubs get their snacks is right after breakfast, which is around 9:00 am and lunch is served around 2:30 pm.

After breakfast and snack time, it’s time for a major water fight!  Munsey and boda love to splash and play aggressively in the Bear pond and the pool area located in front of the observation window at Wildwood Zoo in Marshfield, Wisconsin.aDSC_8836

What’s Up with Munsey & Boda

Munsey and Boda now stand at a height of 7 feet tall (measuring from hind legs to their head) and 9 feet in height if (measured from hind feet to front legs).

The cubs love to take a bath and splash each other in the pond located in the Bear Woods! They also love to eat any new cat tails planted in the pond.   The head zoo keeper Steve Burns, had hoped that Munsey and Boda would allow the plants to grow but in 30 minutes time, the plants had been devoured by the cubs!

Munsey talent is to take a rock and place it on his snout and flips it into the air.  He’ll also take a large stick and use it to scratch his chin, head and back.

Boda’s special talent is climbing high into the trees, sometimes 35 feet up into the trees.

Work in Progress

The two images above depicts the creation of the collagraph print of the elephant composition that I’m working on at this time.  The collagraph plate of the elephant was inked and printed after I had inked and printed the background plate.  Tiny seed beads were added after the I had added watercolor to the composition.

The image above depicts the background collagraph print (which is the same print as used for the elephant’s background.  The bear is made from paper toweling that is colored with water color.  I sprayed the paper toweling with a fixative, so I could utilize the paper toweling to be used in my collages.  The fixative seals the water colors into the paper and will not allow the color to bleed out onto the collagraph print.

Both the young and the young at heart love interacting with Munsey and Boda!

Charcoal Drawing of Munsey

The drawing of Munsey had taken me about a solid 24 hours of time from start to finish.  Of course I didn’t sit down for 24 hours and draw the composition all at one time.  I spent about a month working on this drawing, while I worked on other bear related collages.

I used multiple photographs of Munsey in order to get the lighting and perspective of the bear captured correctly.  The fur coat was drawn three different layers because it needed to capture the muscle tone, the bears under coat as well as his wispier top coat.

This wasn’t an easy draw and I had to constantly remind myself that I could accomplish this task if I persevered!  So, I was was very pleased with the end result!

Once I had drawn out the basic outline of the bear in pencil,  I used powered charcoal, feathers, a sham, various types of erasers to draw the this composition.  I had the most fun drawing the fur coat because it lends itself to be more abstract.
