TING  is a 32″ x 36″ pen and ink drawing enhanced with watercolor and colored pencils.  This composition was created while I was cleaning and painting my art studio.  I believe that some of the fumes from my cleaning products had an impact on the subject and style of this composition.  Ting was inspired by Dr. Seuss and a number of people immediately made that connection with Dr. Seuss and this composition.

Ting is only one of over 30 pieces of artwork on exhibit at the iMAGEiNETHAT! Art Studio located in Arbor Vitae, just 1.2 miles north of Lakeland Airport on Bayer Lake Road.  My studio is listed as #14 on the NORTHWOODS ART  TOUR GUIDE. To learn more about the art tour go to  northwoodsarttour.com  The tour dates are July 29th, 30th, 31st and October 7,8 and 9th and the hours are 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.

The process of drawing this 32″ x 36″ charcoal drawing titled  Munsey was a task that had taken me out of my comfort zone. While drawing Munsey, I discovered that I used the same drawing techniques that  I had used when I was drawing a series title Bombus  which was a more surrealistic group of drawings.  When drawing with powdered charcoal I always enjoy experimenting with more unorthodox tools to create my marks.  I use any materials that have a slightly tacky surface that helps me create interesting marks which help me create organic formations and interesting textures.

The bone structure of the Kodiak cub was used as a guide when creating the tufts of fur throughout the composition.  When I’m drawing, I always hyper-focus  on the details and use multiple photographs to help me me make the observations in regards to bone structure, lighting and creating depth through lighting and developing texture in in the composition.

I spent over 24 hours drawing Munsey but I’m not sure of the amount of time I spent observing and photographing the two Kodiak cubs, so I could have a reference as to how to proceed in the creation of the composition.

Bombus is a charcoal drawing that is 3′ x 5′ and was also created with the same drawing techniques as the composition Munsey. To learn more about NORTHWOODS ART TOUR go to northwoodsarttour.comwendlandt_s_bombus_1jpg

My wonderful daughter has been a line therapist working with autistic children for the past five years.  In honor of her work and those families and friends touched by autism, I’ve created a new series of artwork inspired by daughters dedication and love for children with autism.  The title of this series is “Leap of Faith”.  There are seven collages in this series but I will continue to create more artwork based on this theme.  The images will also be sold as greeting cards.

I’ve been preparing for the upcoming 2016 NORTHWOODS ART  TOUR which will be held on July 29th,30th and 31st.  The art studio will be open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm each of those days.  At this time I will not be able to take credit cards due to some technical difficulties.

iMAGiNETHAT! Art Studio is listed as #14 on the self guided tour map.  My artwork is very diverse in medium and the subject matter always represents a mixture of the spirited girl from Chicago with a sprinkling of the Wisconsin North Woods life style.

During the art tour I will be demonstrating printmaking on my Intaglio Printing Press  and I look forward to answering any of your questions in regards to my original prints as well as the background stories behind the creations of my charcoal drawings, collages, assemblages and photography.

I hope you’ll stop in and explore the unique artwork at iMAGiNETHAT! Art Studio located five miles north of Woodruff  and 1.2 miles north of Lakeland Airport ,  just off of North Farming Road, first driveway on Bayer Lake Road.

I spent a few hours photographing Munsey and Boda on June 8th, 9th and 10th.  The cubs are 285 pounds and they are as active and very  inquisitive about everything.

Munsey found a frog hopping around the edge of the pond that’s located in the Woodland Habitat Area.  He was extremely intrigued by the frog.  After playing with it and tasting it, he spit it out of his mouth and then he finally ate the little hopper!

The cubs are enjoying their four foot deep pond and spend a lot of time swimming around, munching on roots.  It appears they  like flossing their teeth with the roots as well. The  Woodland Habitat Area pond offers the cubs an opportunity to float on their blue and red balls and multiple water fights are held on a daily basis.

From my experience the cubs seem to be very active around 10:30am to noon.  That’s when I’ve found them swimming in the pond, climbing trees and chasing each other around the Woodland Habitat Area.

I just finished creating a few more new photographic books of Munsey and Boda  and they  will be for sale around June 20th.  They will also be on sale during the  2016 NORTHWOODS ART TOUR, to learn more about this event go to northwoodsarttour.com

My latest series “Survivors” is dedicated to the orphaned Kodiak bear cubs that were rescued in May of 2015 and relocated to the Wildwood Zoo, Marshfield, WI.  If you search through some of my earlier posts listed under (Kodiak bear cubs)  you’ll find links to news articles and video segments offering information  on the rescue efforts and relocation of the cubs and learn about why I’ve been inspired by the orphaned Kodiak bear cubs.
Many of the original prints I’ve created are also offered as reproduction prints in the format of greeting cards.

I just finished my first charcoal drawing of Munsey and I’ve started to work on the next  charcoal drawing, which is of Boda.   Most of the charcoal drawing is created with powered charcoal and feathers.  the feathers work very well for making subtractive and additive mark making.  I love using feathers because they don’t leave as sharp and controlled of mark on my paper when I’m drawing.  I also create three layers of marks when creating the bears fur coat.  When it comes to drawing I hyper focus on producing extremely detailed work in my compositions.

This summer my Kodiak Bear charcoal drawings , greeting cards, photography and photographic books will be for sale, along with my Intaglio prints, collages, lamp-worked beads and assemblages at my art studio during the 2016 North-Woods Studio Tour.aDSC_9099 copy 15-11-10
